A Real Pain In The Neck
If you ride a motorcycle, then I'll bet you've been stuck at a traffic light waiting for it to change to let you through. How about those left turn arrows? Those can really be a pain, right?
Well, I share your frustration - at least I DID. Now, I use this handy little motorcycle accessory called The Light Knight and I seldom get stuck waiting for a traffic light to change for me.
The Light Knight Can Be Your Salvation, Too
The Light Knight easily attaches to any motorcycle, out of sight and out of the way. Once you install one, you'll forget it's there... until you remember how tricky it used to be to get through traffic lights.
A lot of traffic lights use buried sensors to detect when a vehicle is present. Left turn lanes are the most popular places but some secondary roads have lights that only turn green when there's a vehicle waiting.
How frustrating has it been for you to wait and wait, watching all the other lights cycle, but never allowing you to have your turn? There are just not enough solid steel parts on a motorcycle to trip the sensors. That's what it's all about - ferrous metal (steel) that the buried sensors can "see."
Modern technology uses these buried sensors to detect when a vehicle is waiting. You can identify these lights by the square or round saw cuts in the pavement. They're most prevalent in left turn lanes. I'm sure you know what I mean.
These buried sensors work a lot like a metal detector, relying on "seeing" some metal to interrupt their magnetic field to let them know someone is there to activate the traffic light changer circuitry. There just are not enough steel parts in a motorcycle for the sensors to see you. If they can't see your bike, they'll never change for you.
A Simple Solution To An Overwhelming Problem
Until now, the best you could hope for was that a car or truck would pull up behind you, close enough to cover the sensor and trip the light. Even some old tricks like rolling forward and back or swinging down your kick-stand won't work.
Maybe you've even taken a chance on blowing the light. I discovered the hard way, even at 3AM when there's not another vehicle in sight, if there's a cop anywhere nearby, they'll nail you in a heartbeat. The judges won't listen to your excuse, either. That tactic can get mighty expensive and racks up the points on your driver's license.
It's Almost Like Driving A Mack Truck
The Light Knight works and it works well. In fact, it works on about 80% of the buried sensors in use today. If The Light Knight doesn't always work, it's the fault of the traffic light or the sensor. Not much we can do about that, except remember where those lights are so we can avoid them.
The sensors have to be sensitive enough to detect a car on top of them, but not so sensitive that a vehicle in an adjacent lane or parked along side will trip them. Some are just way out of adjustment. Sometimes, a call to the local highway maintenance department will get those pesky lights adjusted back to working properly so they'll detect The Light Knight and let you have your turn.
Since installing one of these accessories on my Harley Davidson motorcycle, I rarely have to wait any longer than I would if I was in a car... or, even a Mack truck!
